Compassionate psychiatrist blending clinical expertise, cultural competence & empathy for children, teens, adults & families.

A dual board-certified psychiatrist (adult, child, and adolescent), Dr. Roberto Montenegro brings decades of academic rigor and empathetic clinical care to every patient he serves. Trained at Yale University (adult psychiatry) and the University of Washington (child & adolescent psychiatry fellowship), he also holds a PhD in Sociology from UCLA, where he specialized in race, medical sociology, and doctor–patient communication. Dr. Montenegro practices through his telepsychiatry boutique, Montenegro & Associates Behavioral Health, providing accessible, confidential care across Washington, California, and Alaska. He serves children, teens, adults, high-stakes professionals, neurodiverse individuals, and families all through an inclusive, evidence-based approach grounded in collaboration, empathy, and cultural competence. Beyond his private practice, Dr. Montenegro is a clinical assistant professor at the UW School of Medicine and a researcher at Seattle Children’s Hospital. He’s recognized nationally for his work in bias reduction, health inequities, and anti-racism clinical education, and previously directed mental health services at Echo Glen Children’s Center, caring for youth involved with the juvenile justice system. A passionate advocate for accessible care, Dr. Montenegro is one of Washington’s few bilingual (Spanish-speaking) child psychiatrists—providing culturally attuned support to diverse families. His style blends “real talk” with empathy, humor, and when needed, gentle firmness—a balance that encourages growth and healing. When he’s not working, you’ll often find him exploring the outdoors, traveling, or enjoying time with loved ones and his “Chief Happiness Officer,” Oso.
