Forest Ferns Counseling is a group of second-act clinicians offering identity-affirming therapy for people navigating transition, grief, trauma & change.

At Forest Ferns Counseling, we work with people who are standing at a threshold. Sometimes that threshold is obvious — a diagnosis, a loss, a divorce, a shift in identity, a child who needs something new from you. Sometimes it is quieter: a sense that the life you built no longer fits the person you are becoming. Therapy here begins in that moment. We are a group of second-act clinicians. Before becoming therapists, we were educators, researchers, artists, advocates, caregivers, and professionals in other fields. Those earlier lives shape how we listen. We understand that people do not arrive in therapy as blank slates — they arrive with histories, commitments, cultures, bodies, and communities that matter. Our practice is identity-affirming and trauma-informed. Many of the people we work with are navigating complex trauma, chronic illness, neurodivergence, caregiving roles, religious transition, gender and sexual identity exploration, or the ongoing strain of living in systems that were not designed with them in mind. Others come because something meaningful is changing and they want support that is thoughtful, steady, and collaborative as they move through it. Forest Ferns Counseling is a Deaf-led practice, and we bring deep experience working across communication styles and cultural contexts. We welcome Deaf and hard-of-hearing clients, LGBTQ+ and nonbinary clients, parents and families in transition, artists and academics, therapists seeking their own care, and people returning to therapy after earlier experiences that did not quite fit. Many of our clients are thoughtful observers of their own lives who are ready for work that engages both insight and the nervous system. Across the practice, our clinicians draw from approaches such as somatic therapy, EMDR and MEMI, parts-based work, narrative and humanistic traditions, and practical skill-building when it is useful. We pay attention to both body and story. Rather than applying a single method to everyone, we shape therapy around the person sitting with us. What makes Forest Ferns distinctive is not only what we treat, but how we work. We believe therapy should feel grounded, respectful, and real. You do not have to arrive with a clear plan or the right words. It is enough to notice that something in your life is shifting and to begin there.
