History Of Livengrin Livengrin was founded by Standish Forde Hansell, a Philadelphia-area advertising executive and entrepreneur. In the early 1960’s Hansell purchased a former private school campus in Bensalem with plans to open a retirement community for men to “live and grin” into their golden years. Instead, acting on the advice of a few trusted friends, Hansell transformed the 46-acre property into one of the first non-hospital facilities in Pennsylvania to treat alcoholism. At that time, no market analysis endorsed the notion of this venture as a lucrative business prospect, insurance companies hesitated to cover treatment costs, and there was a noticeable absence of public outcry advocating for the compassionate support of alcoholics. However, Hansell believed that there was a tremendous need in the region. In 1966, Livengrin opened its doors with 22 beds for men and expanded its services to include women within six months. Rooted in the principles of the Minnesota model, Livengrin's program was inspired by Alcoholics Anonymous and the Hazelton Foundation, both renowned for their affiliation to the 12-step program.
