M.A., M.Div., LCMHC, NCC Kim Thornton is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor and a National Certified Counselor since 2019. She received her Masters in Counseling and Masters of Divinity from Wake Forest University and holds dual Bachelors’ degrees in Psychology and Spanish from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington Kim draws from Existential, Feminist, and Person-Centered theories in her counseling practice that is supplemented by a diverse spiritual education background. She enjoys working together with clients to understand and create meaning in their lives, as well as address social power differentials and hierarchies within systems. This theoretical orientation relies heavily on the idea that people are not broken or need to be “fixed,” but experience natural responses to difficult circumstances, instead needing compassion, understanding, and support in tough times. Kim hopes to create and hold space for her clients, together exploring and allowing authenticity, empowerment, and connectedness to emerge. Kim has significant experience counseling on college campuses, such as Salem College and NC State University, as well as in community mental health.
