Daniel Brake
(He/Him/His)
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)
I offer Gottman Method couples counseling and individual psychotherapy using mindfulness and research-based approaches.
All day long, your brain spits out thoughts and emotions; that's just what brains do. The good news is that thoughts and emotions don't cause any problems in your life. The trouble starts when you have a reaction to that thought or emotion. You tell yourself a story about what that thought means about you, the people in your life, or the world at large. You have an opinion on whether that feeling is "correct," or you wish you felt something different--or that someone else would act differently so you wouldn't have to feel that way. You're reading this because something in your life isn't working. Your thoughts are getting stuck in unhelpful patterns, your emotions are distressing, or your relationship is dissatisfying. You recognize that your strategies aren't working; they don't result in your needs being met, or when they do the cost is too high. My approach focuses on learning to pay attention to what's going on in the present moment, on purpose and without judgement. A simple idea that can be incredibly hard to pull off. When you do, you might notice that the story your brain comes up with isn't true--or even if it is--doesn't need to dictate your behavior. You can change your relationship with the emotions you feel so that, even with the difficult ones, you suffer less. In your relationship, I can teach you new ways of communicating, managing inevitable conflict, building trust and intimacy, and reconnecting with your partner as your best friend. You can make the change.
